Somerset County is one of the great central and
northern counties of Maine. The million acres of land purchased by William Bingham, of Philadelphia, is in
the Western part of the state and lies mostly
in Somerset.

Somerset County was incorporated in 1809 and
was named for Somersetshire, England. Its territory
was formerly embraced by Kennebec County, and sections of it have since been taken to form Franklin
and Piscataquis counties.
